About Traditional Chinese(Click to open)
Traditional Chinese, also known as Standard Chinese (Zhengti Zhongwen), refers to the standard set of Chinese characters that have evolved and been in continuous use for thousands of years. It preserves the structure and aesthetics of ancient characters and is currently the prevailing script used in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, and most overseas Chinese communities.
The primary difference between it and Simplified Chinese originated in the mid-20th century when mainland China promoted the “Chinese Character Simplification Scheme” (漢字簡化方案) to increase literacy rates. Simplified characters reduce the complexity of the forms by decreasing strokes, merging components (radicals), or standardizing cursive forms. For example, “龍” (lóng, dragon) was simplified to “龙”, and “門” (mén, door) to “门”.
The greatest value of Traditional Chinese lies in how the character forms themselves tell stories and convey meaning. Many components within the characters carry their original semantic value, much like miniature pictographs. A classic example is the character “愛” (ài, love). The traditional form contains the “心” (xīn, heart) radical in its center, profoundly expressing the idea that “love comes from the heart,” whereas the simplified character “爱” has removed the “heart.”
By learning Traditional Chinese, one is not just recognizing a symbol, but also deciphering the millennia of cultural accumulation and wisdom of character creation behind each word. This allows the forms of the characters to become more three-dimensional, warm, and complete in the mind.
